From gold that underpins our economy to the rare earths powering our defence and renewables sectors, Australia’s resources industry is as diverse as it is influential.
Let’s walk through a few of the major segments within the ever-changing Australian resources landscape – gold, copper, lithium, rare earths and silica sands – highlighting their uses and the ASX-listed companies leading each space.
Why do they matter and who’s steering their future?
• Quick Overview •
Resources are a cornerstone of Australia’s economy, contributing roughly 13 to 14 percent of GDP and close to two-thirds of merchandise exports.
Beyond the headline figures, the sector supplies a vast range of commodities crucial to both traditional industry and the clean-energy transition.
The ASX hosts everything from global majors like BHP and Rio Tinto to nimble juniors chasing the next big discovery.
• Gold •
Gold has underpinned Australia’s mining sector for more than a century. Beyond bullion and jewellery, small quantities are indispensable in high-performance electronics. Australia is currently the world’s third-largest gold producer, with annual output hovering at around 300 tonnes, generating exports worth $33 billion in fiscal 2024.
With Newcrest absorbed into Newmont, Northern Star Resources is now the largest pure-gold producer on the ASX. Evolution Mining ranks close behind with assets across Western Australia, Queensland, and Canada. Elsewhere, dozens of other homegrown companies like Yandal in Western Australia are pioneering with new discoveries set to add even more value to the Australian gold market.
• Copper •
Copper is the workhorse metal of electrification. It is essential for power grids, electric motors, and renewable-energy infrastructure.
Australia ranks second globally for copper resources, producing around 800,000 tonnes annually and generating around $15 billion in export earnings.
Diversified giants BHP and Rio Tinto anchor the sector. Mid-tier Sandfire Resources offers copper-pure exposure, while explorers such as Queensland’s Superior Resources provide potential upside from discoveries.
• Lithium •
Lithium-ion batteries dominate energy storage; about 80 per cent of global lithium goes into rechargeable batteries. Australia is the world’s leading producer, supplying over a third of global supply either domestically or through Australian-owned projects overseas.
Pilbara Minerals leads production growth. Elevra Lithium (formerly Sayona), Allkem, Mineral Resources, and Liontown are also key names, together with Argentina-focused Lake Resources.
• Rare Earths & Critical Minerals •
Rare earth magnets enable EV motors, wind turbines, and defence technologies. Australian miners are building mine-to-magnet capability, both domestically and internationally, in the push for an ex-China supply chain.
Lynas is the largest non-China producer. Arafura’s Nolans project (mine plus refinery in the NT), Iluka’s Eneabba refinery, and tech-savvy Ionic Rare Earths (with their world-leading recycling tech in Belfast, UK) extend the ASX’s downstream reach.
• Silica Sands •
High-purity silica sand is vital for solar-panel glass and smartphone screens; demand is rising with renewable-energy growth.
Queensland’s Diatreme Resources has one of the largest resource bases of low iron, high purity silica suitable for solar panels, while in WA, VRX Silica is among the emerging producers planning to supply the Asian market.
The rise of new producers such as Diatreme will add additional supply of this key critical mineral for the solar energy boom.
– The Bottom Line –
Australia’s resources sector is rich and diverse, spanning precious metals, base metals, and the critical minerals underpinning clean technology.
Gold and copper are mainstays, while lithium and rare earths align the nation with the global push towards electrification. Silica-sand projects show the sector’s agility in seizing high-growth niches amid the continuing boom in solar energy.
